Striped Hyena 2010
Striped Hyena 2010
In December of 2009, K'S PATH received three striped hyenas that had been smuggled into Kuwait from Yemen. One of the pups died even as it arrived in our care. Another died during the first night. Both fell victim to hypothermia and malnourishment, the result of being smuggled in small holds and being fed improperly. The last, a tiny female cub, pulled through the first night and began to show signs of improvement and recovery over the next few days.
Without an adequate facility or sufficient staff for lifetime care, K'S PATH management began the arduous process of finding a suitable life-time care facility for the female, now named Ayana. With a few options available, it was decided the Al Ain Wildlife Park would be the best choice as she would be used to educate the public about her amazing species.
Nearly 80% of all smuggled wildlife die before they even reach their destination. Help stop this practice by joining K'S PATH as a volunteer. Send an email to volunteers@kspath.org. Your financial contribution can also help to put an end to this cruel and shameful trade. Join sponsors like Wataniya Airways who made the relocation of Ayana possible.
Special thanks goes to Wataniya Airways for transport, Al Ain Wildlife Park for taking our darling Ayana, the San Diego Zoo for thorough advice and material contribution, and Ms. Leonie Coetzer for getting up at 3a.m. for bottle feedings.
